Register now for the #Hack4Surgery - Hackathon on digital surgery
Improving medical decisions in the emergency department with machine learning - that is the challenge of the #Hack4Surgery hackathon. Students and young scientists are developing innovative solutions to optimize emergency surgery and thus save lives. They use machine learning methods and artificial intelligence to do so. The hackathon will take place all day on June 6, 2025 at the Bonner Bogen. Interested teams can register until May 30. The event is a cooperation between the Bonn Surgical Technology Center (Boster) of the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) and the Transfer Center enaCom of the University of Bonn.
From the BSI to the lecture hall: Dr. Gerhard Schabhüser strengthens cryptography teaching
With the start of the summer semester 2025, the Institute of Computer Science is gaining a lecturer with impressive practical experience: Dr. Gerhard Schabhüser, long-time Vice President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), is now bringing his knowledge to university teaching. With his lecture “Classical Cryptography, Cryptanalysis and Boolean Functions”, he is building a bridge between theory and application-oriented security technology.
AI in the natural sciences: Between black box and scientific knowledge
Explainable artificial intelligence is helpful and valuable in a scientific context if its statements can be scientifically categorized. If there is no scientific basis, scientists must be aware of potential misunderstandings when dealing with AI. This is the conclusion of a recent publication by the University of Bonn, which has now appeared in the journal “Cell Reports Physical Science”. Background: Researchers in chemistry, biology, and medicine are increasingly relying on AI models to develop new hypotheses. However, it is often unclear on what basis the algorithms arrive at their results and to what extent they can be generalized.
Happy Birthday, Supercomputer Marvin!
Our ultimate answer to (almost) all questions: Supercomputer Marvin has been available to researchers for exactly one year - and the University of Bonn can look back on 365 days in which numerous projects could be realized thanks to its computing power. Scientists and employees now had the opportunity to celebrate one year of successful High Performance Computing (HPC) at a ceremony on the Poppelsdorf campus and to select the three most exciting projects from a wide range of disciplines as winners.
Congratulations NimbRo@Home: Our household robots win the RoboCup German open again
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Sven Behnke, the domestic service robots impress at the open German championships in Nuremberg.
WestAI research project enables easy access to Artificial Intelligence
SMEs and research institutions have increasing need for expertise and computing capacity for their AI research. Prominent academic institutions of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, led by the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Bonn, have jointly formed the AI service center WestAI to provide AI services and proprietary AI research in support of business and research. The state-of-the-art computing infrastructures of RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich are utilized for the services. As of now, interested outside parties can request computing time for AI projects via the WestAI website. At present the services are provided free of charge thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
