Research and Study at the University of Excellence Bonn

At the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Excellence Bonn, cutting-edge research meets excellent teaching.

Our internationally visible research addresses fundamental challenges in Cyber Security, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Robotics. Our students and researchers benefit from state-of-the-art facilities such as High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, robotics labs and a Visual Computing Incubator.
About our research

As a department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Computer Science in Bonn can look back on a long history that began in 1969 with the founding of the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. As one of the pioneering institutes for Computer Science in Germany, we have a well established track record in teaching. Every year, over 1500 bright minds study at our faculty. Around 800 are enrolled in the bachelor's degree course in alone — one of the most popular degree programs in Germany with outstanding career prospects in almost all sectors.→ About the study program

News Reports from the Institute
Prof. Matthew Smith Awarded ERC Advanced Grant
Digital technologies and security legislation shape the daily lives of millions of people. Careless or abusive use can restrict fundamental rights, fail to adequately curb online hate and abuse, or create new technological risks. To develop solutions to these ethical and technical conflicts, Prof. Dr. Matthew Smith, a computer scientist at the University of Bonn and the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), has been awarded a prestigious Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The European Union will provide approximately €2.5 million over the next five years to support his project.
AI26 – The Lamarr Conference: From AI Research to Innovation and Value Creation
AI26 – The Lamarr Conference will bring together international experts from academia, business, and politics in Bonn on July 7 and 8, 2026, to discuss current developments in artificial intelligence and their translation into innovation and societal applications.
University of Bonn Students Triumph with Autonomous Racecar
LamarRacing, a student AI and robotics project at the University of Bonn, won an award at the RoboRacer Competition held as part of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2026 in Vienna. In the time trial competition, the Bonn-based LamarRacing team posted the best performance of the entire field and won the time trial classification by a wide margin. For this achievement, the team received the “Best Performance Overall” award. In the subsequent 1-on-1 race format, LamarRacing finished in fourth place.
Bonn Science Night: Diagnosing the Future with AI
How will artificial intelligence transform the medicine of the future? What role will it play in addressing societal challenges such as education, caregiving, and managing natural hazards? These questions were the focus of the 15th Bonn Science Night on May 21 and 22, 2026, under the theme “Diagnosis: The Future.” The theme tied in with the 2026 Year of Science, “Medicine of the Future,” while also focusing on technological developments that extend far beyond the healthcare sector. Universities, research institutes, and scientific organizations from the region presented current research on Bonn’s Münsterplatz and invited the public to engage in direct dialogue.

Digital "Red Cross Emblem" to Protect Against Attacks

Humanitarian protection and support for victims of war and armed violence — that is the aim of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The symbol of the Red Cross is intended to protect aid workers from attacks during their missions. Can this symbol also be used in the digital world? Our international team is researching the protection for online resources.
