Ahead of it are only the Technical University of Munich at No. 45, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich at No. 49, and the University of Heidelberg at No. 59. Along with these three universities, Bonn is the only German institution of higher education to rank among the top 100 in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking.

"Confirmation of our successful strategy for the future"

"In March of this year, we reaffirmed our position as the most successful university in the Excellence Strategy. The fact that we are now once again among the top universities in Germany, Europe, and the world in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking demonstrates the outstanding and consistent strength of the University of Bonn as a center of excellence," says the Rector of the University of Bonn, Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Michael Hoch. "This success is not only a reflection of our academic excellence, but also a confirmation of our successful strategy for the future, which we are consistently refining and implementing. Our next goal is to be among the top 50 universities in the world by the end of 2032. This ranking provides an excellent foundation for achieving that goal."

Compared to the previous year, the University of Bonn’s ranking has thus changed only minimally: In 2025, it ranked 68th worldwide, 4th in Germany, and 11th within the European Union. The current results thus confirm the university’s exceptionally stable position among the world’s top institutions.

The Shanghai Ranking, which has been published annually since 2003, focuses on universities' research performance. Six indicators are evaluated. Six indicators are evaluated. These include, among other things, Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to alumni and researchers; the number of highly cited scientists; publications in the journals *Nature* and *Science*; overall scientific output; and research output relative to the university’s size. More than 2,500 institutions of higher education are considered for the ranking; the top 1,000 universities worldwide are published.

As Germany’s most successful "University of Excellence" – with eight Clusters of Excellence – the University of Bonn develops solutions to the global challenges of the 21st century. Located in the City of the United Nations, it combines cutting-edge research, excellent teaching, and a culture of diversity. It nurtures talent at every stage of a career, inspires the next generation of leaders, and generates knowledge that drives social and technological progress.
