About Us

Welcome to the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bonn, where cutting-edge research meets excellent education!

We are proud to offer comprehensive bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science that provide a comprehensive and modern foundation. We also offer internationally recognized English-language master's programs and actively contribute to the Life Science Informatics and Media Informatics programs at the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it).

Our internationally visible research addresses fundamental challenges in Cyber Security, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotics. Our students and researchers benefit from state-of-the-art facilities such as High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, robotics labs and a visual computing incubator. We work actively with the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it), the Bonn Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics and several Fraunhofer Institutes and participate in interdisciplinary institutions such as the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence or the Cluster of excellence PhenoRob, to name just a few.

As a department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Excellence in Bonn, the Institute of Computer Science can look back on a long history. It began in 1969 with the founding of the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science — one of the pioneering institutes for Computer Science in Germany. Ever since, we maintain a successful track record in education and teaching. In total, more than 1,500 students study Computer Science in our courses — around 800 are enrolled in the bachelor's degree course in alone. Our diverse students, coming from all over the world, benefit from a wealth of special offers and activities, including an active and committed Student Body, various funding and scholarship programs, cross-career days, hackathons, summer schools and the GIDIS-Project for the promotion of equal opportunities as well as lived integration and diversity. Since its foundation in 2001, the Bonn Informatics Society has honored outstanding bachelor's and master's theses every year, and students from our faculty are regularly among the winners.

Our students also enjoy the benefits of well-established regional and international networks. In 2002, for example, the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it) was founded as a joint institution of the University of Bonn, the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer Institutes in Birlinghoven. This cooperation consolidates Bonn's position as a stronghold of Computer Science and offers students the opportunity to participate in basic and applied research during their studies.
