Research at the Institute of Computer Science

We are one of the pioneering institutes for Computer Science in Germany since 1969.

Our internationally visible research addresses fundamental challenges in Cyber Security, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Robotics.

Our students and researchers benefit from state-of-the-art facilities such as High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, robotics labs and a Visual Computing Incubator (VCR). We actively collaborate with numerous research centers, clusters and companies as well as several Fraunhofer Institutes and participate in interdisciplinary institutions such as the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence or the Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob, to name just a few.

In addition, our academics and vice versa benefit from our well-established regional and international networks and long-standing partnerships with numerous renowned research institutions.

On top of this, the University of Bonn has been one of eleven German University Associations and Universities of Excellence since summer 2019. In 2018, the University of Bonn was the only German university to receive funding approval for six Clusters of Excellence in the Excellence Competition organized by the federal and state governments: This makes it the most successful University of Excellence in the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.

Computational Analytics

We research and teach in both theoretical and practical aspects of Computational Analytics, covering both algorithmic data analysis and practical implementation on high performance systems.

We research and teach on various aspects of computer vision, including 2D/3D images and shapes, volumetric videos, 3D objects and scenes – the basis for a wide range of current and future applications.

We research and teach on various aspects of IT Security and Networked Systems. Our work covers a broad spectrum, from detecting and analyzing attacks on IT systems to researching human factors in Cyber Security.

We research and teach the design and theoretical analysis of algorithms in order to design improved algorithms in different application contexts and to develop a deeper understanding of algorithmic possibilities and limitations.
