We are pleased to welcome the new junior professors Dr. Zorah Lähner and Dr. Hermann Blum at the Institute of Computer Science

Welcome, Dr. Zorah Lähner!

Dr. Zorah Lähner works in the Department 2 Visual Computing and heads the working group “Geometry in Machine Learning”. Her research focuses on the analysis and optimization of geometric 3D objects using machine learning approaches. The application of geometric principles has the potential to improve algorithms and neural networks in many ways, e.g. by reducing the dimensionality of problems or simplifying their representation.

In addition to her work at the Institute of Computer Science, she is also a Principal Investigator in the field of Hybrid ML at the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Before coming to Bonn in 2024, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Siegen and at various research institutes worldwide: Technion, Meta Reality Labs, Sapienza Università di Roma and Toshiba Research Europe. She studied computer science at the University of Bonn and the Technical University of Munich, where she also received her doctorate in 2021.

Welcome, Dr. Hermann Blum!

Dr. Hermann Blum heads the “Robot Perception and Learning” working group in Department 6 Intelligent Systems and Robotics. He works on robots that can semantically and geometrically understand their environment in order to perform manipulations and other safety-critical tasks in the vicinity of humans. In particular, the lab researches how robots can familiarize themselves with their environment and adapt to changes.

In addition to his work at the Institute of Computer Science, he is also a Principal Investigator in the field of Emobodied AI at the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Hermann Blum studied electrical engineering and information technology at ETH Zurich and Imperial College London. He completed his PhD at the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH Zurich in 2022. This was followed by an internship at Google Research and a post-doc position at the Computer Vision and Geometry Lab at ETH Zurich.
