Compatibility of Family and Career

Studying, completing a doctoral degree or working with a child

Regardless of whether they are studying, doing a doctorate or pursuing a career, parents — and mothers in particular — face particular challenges and burdens when they have a child. As before, it is mainly women who adapt the extent of their employment to their changed family situation following the birth of children.
In order to support parents, and mothers in particular, in the balancing act between studies, a doctoral degree, or career on the one hand and family life and childcare on the other, we have established various offers in Computer Science. In addition, the Office of Family Services of the university, also supports students, doctoral candidates and working academics with children.

The KidsBox — the mobile parent-child room

We know that childcare can sometimes be a real challenge. The childminder is ill, the kindergarten is closed and the grandparents or partner can't help out either? No problem. You can simply book one of the mobile KidsBoxes.

The KidsBox is a cabinet on wheels which, when opened, provides play and changing facilities as well as a travel crib.

Guide to Reconciling Family and Academic Qualifications

A wide range of measures offered by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and other organizations are intended to significantly improve equal opportunities in the compatibility of family and academic qualification. This guide by the Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft (GEW, engl. "education and science union") serves as a source of information for (prospective) academics about their own rights and existing opportunities to reconcile family and career so that they can actually claim and exercise them.
