I investigate architectural and system issues related to construction
of large distributed information systems. The focus of the research
has so far been on the following themes:
(1) scalable and efficient distributed information systems;
(2) techniques for adaptability and extensibility of distributed systems;
(3) techniques for efficient managenent of 3D/4D spatial data.
(4) techniques for integration of legacy databases;
1999 - 2001, SFB 350 joint research program,
D4 subproject: "Object-Oriented Geo-Information System"
- Responsible for for coordination, architecture design and programming.
The project has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB 350) in geosciences.
It was a subproject in a large interdisciplinary research program SFB350 from
about 25 research projects from different departments of University of Bonn.
The claimants of this project were Prof. Dr. Armin B. Cremers and Prof. Dr. Agemar Siehl.
The primary goals of the project were to investigate:
How can 3D geo-scientific data be modelled using object oriented data
management techniques? What are the demands on state-of-the-art 3D GIS
and how to meet them? How can these techniques be extended to allow the
representation of the fourth dimension: time?
The main contribution of the project was design and development of a distributed
3D/4D Geo-Information System (GIS) and efficient database
support to handle large sets of spatial and spatio-temporal data.
The system was developed in a close cooperation between geologists
and computer scientists. The core of the system has four basic components:
GeoToolKit/GeoStore/XDA/GeoWeb. Where:
GeoToolKit - a geometric object-oriented 3D/4D database kernel,
GeoStore - an information system for geologically defined geometries that
has been developed on top of the GeoToolkit,
eXtensible Database Adapter (XDA) - opens access to ObjectStore-based
object-oriented databases for CORBA environment and for the Web,
GeoWeb - WWW client interface.
My challenges in the project were :
- design and development of CORBA-based distribute GeoStore architectire,
- design and development of eXtensible Database Adapter (XDA),
- design and development of 4D extension for GeoToolKit,
Used programming languages: C++, Java, CORBA IDL, Perl.
- April 1997 to August 1999 - Research Scientist

1996 - 1999, DFG joint research program "Interoperable Geoscientific Information systems (IOGIS)",
subproject "Geological mapping with GIS on the basis of 3D models"
- Responsible for architecture design and programming.
The project has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The started in August 1996 and was first promoted for two years, until July 1998.
The succeeding period was granted for additional two years and directly hooked up
to the first period.
It was a joint project between three participants:
Institute for Geology at the University of Bonn, at the Institute for Geology,
Geophysics and Geo-Computer Sciences at the FU Berlin,
Institute for Computer Sciences III at the University of Bonn.
The claimants of this project were Prof. Dr. Armin B. Cremers,
Prof. Dr. Hajo Götze and Prof. Dr. Agemar Siehl.
The primary objective of the project was development of technology for
computer-based generation of plausible geological maps by the cut of a
3D model with the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the specific region.
The validity of the resulted 3D model was based on an iterative
development process with help of the geological and the
geophysical applications.
To reduce inconsistencies in the 3D model was developed a component-based GIS,
which consists from a geological (GOCAD) and a geophysical (IGMAS) 3D modeling
tools bound together via GeoStore, a 3D geodatabase system. The communication
between these components was realised on top of CORBA middleware platform. For
CORBA/ObjectStore integration was developed a special object adapter.

Russian Academy of Sciences

1997, Reflective Object Oriented Language project -
Responsible for project coordination.
Design and prototyping of experimental Reflective Object Oriented
Language (ROOL). This language represents object-oriented extension
to PROLOG language. The ROOL prototype architecture based on ideas
of Open Implementation, partial evaluations and dynamic compilation.
This prototype give an ability to research, implement and measure
efficiency of reflection optimization methods.
1996, MicroORB project - Responsible for architecture design and programming.
Development of a methodology for design and implementation
of an open distributed object-oriented systems based on ideas
of object-oriented reflection and Meta-Object Protocols.
According with this methodology, we developed an extension
to CORBA technology for support application specific extensibility
and dynamic adaptation in CORBA-conforming systems.
The goal of this work was to make a high level domain specific
languages that still allow the programmer to control critical
implementation issues where necessary. Metaobject protocols give
users the ability to incrementally modify the system's behaviour
and implementation. Statically typed metalevel implementation
allows to preserve flexibility under strict requirements to
efficiency of meta-object control.

1995, INFOSEM project - Responsible for architecture design and programming.
Project supported by INTAS grant number INTAS-94-1817.
It is a joint project between four participants:
Institute for Problemds of Informatics of the Russian Academy of Science, Moscow, Russia
Kiev State University, Ukraine
Versailles University, PRISM Laboratory, France
Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute, GMD, Darmstadt, Germany
The primary objectives of the INFOSEM project are to investigate,
prototype and disseminate methodologies and basic
techniques allowing construction of semantically interoperable
information systems based on the pre-existing heterogeneous
information resources. My work was focused on development
of an ontology specification integrator workbench prototype.
The main idea was to develop a tool for making decision about
possibility for reuse of pre-existing software components for
distributed information systems development.
The implementation platform for the workbench was the local network
containing Sun SPARC workstations with Orbix from IONA Technologies
that supported the CORBA functionalities. For matabase was implemented
with help of ConceptBase - deductive object-oriented database management system.
The metabase was distributed up to the point that each ontological module
was supported by its own ConceptBase server in the network.
These servers were encapsulated by their CORBA wrappers.
1994, SYNTHESIS project project - Responsible for architecture design and programming.
Project supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research
grant number 94-07-20453.
A technology for the development of wrappers above the knowledge (data)
bases in CORBA was experienced. As an example, a CORBA wrapper for
ConceptBase - a deductive object-oriented database management system was developed.
1993, SYNTHESIS project project - Responsible for architecture design and
programming.
Project supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research
grant number 93-012-618.
The main task was development of visualisation technique for manipulation
with SYNTHESIS data structures. A graphical representation language and
it’s mapping to SYNTHESIS language were developed.
