The 2003 Ebbe Nielsen Prize for innovative application of biodiversity
informatics in biosystematics was awarded in Copenhagen, April 30, to Stefan
Schröder for his ABIS contributions. The prize of US$35.000,00 will enable the
winner to support his research in biodiversity informatics.
The Nielsen Prize, which is the only award in the world for work in biodiversity
informatics, is given each year by the Governing Board of the Global Biodiversity
Information Facility (GBIF). The Prize honors the memory of Ebbe Schmidt Nielsen,
a Dane, who was a renowned entomologist and avid promoter of biodiversity informatics.
He was a founding member of the GBIF Governing Board, on which he represented
Australia.
The Best System Award of the common system exhibition of the German
Annual Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI-99) and of the German
Annual Conference on Pattern Recognition (DAGM '99), in Bonn, September 13-17,
1999, was awarded for the first prototype system of ABIS.
