I can not log in anymore

  1. You tried too often to log. After 5 attempts you are blocked for 15 minutes before you can start a new attempt.
  2. The login process starts, but stops after some time. You not have no free disk space left. Try to clean up your home directory - on Windows it is usually the C: disk. Make sure you can see the hidden files. (Dot files are hidden files, for example). Alternatively, on Linux, you can also work with the in line mode by pressing <ALT>+<Ctrl>+<F1> or pressing <F1> instead of <Return> after log in.

I cannot access the computer pools via access card

  1. Your card is damaged or scratched. You need a new card. It costs 7 euros which will be deducted from your print account if the accounts amount matches. Drop by the helpdesk to get a new one.
  2. Because you have not submitted an application for account renewal.
  3. The access system is broken.
Please notify the support group Neubau.
  4. Because you have not complied with the house rules or policies.
  5. Because you have overdrawn your Printaccounting with more than 5 Euros.
Balance your account. How to do it.

I cannot print

  1. Your print account does not contain enough money.
Balance your account. How to do it.
  2. Determine how much money is on your print account. Also, you can see the date when the last payment has been arrived. With an account imposition more than -2.50 euro, you can not print anymore. With more than -5.00 euro, your account will be blocked.

Please note that the payment needs several days until it arrives on your account. If the money was debited from your bank account but did not arrive on your print accound, write an email to pacadm@informatik.uni-bonn.de, containing the amount of which login name, which UID has read the Bank's remittance slip (you can see to your own voucher) and the date when it has been debited from your account. Further descriptions can be found at Central Printaccounting at the Institute for computer science.

How can I log in on ZEUS on Windows operating systems?

There are several possibilities to log in in on a UNIX machine from a Windows machine,

e.g. using the icon with the name Putty or ssh on your Windows desktop.

A new window pops up. In the line Host Name type in the name zeus and set the button SSH to on.

Now log in with your login name and your password. The first command you should call after a successful login would be pacinfo or quota.

I have exceeded my disk space

On Windows mostly you remember that you have exceeded the disk space when it is too late. You can not log in anymore. Only on a Unix system in line mode (no graphical mode) you can free your disk space. On Unix, you will be issued a warning that your disk space has been exceeded. Then you should of course become active.

  1. Solaris
    1. At the login screen chosse  the item "Options -> Command Line Login".
The desktop changes: from an X interface to a line mode (ASCII Terminal)
    2. Press <RETURN> once or twice.
    3. Login with your login name and password, press <Return>
    4. The command quota -v will display how much disk space you occupy on what disk.
If the text appears EXPIRED, you have exceeded your disk space for more than 7 days. Now you need to delete as much of your home directories content as the text EXPIRED in the command quota-v no longer appears.
    5. There are several Unix commands to look at how much disk space you occupy currently:
e.g. ls -l or du | more, where the first command shows the size of each file in the directory. With the second command you will see the directories with all subdirectories. The lists are displayed in number of blocks. One block represents 512 bytes. (If you have not yet engaged in UNIX, I recommend the book: LINUX IN A NUTSHELL that you can buy often associated with a reduced price).
    6. The command to delete file is rm (stands remove) which needs some additional, such as rm *.pdf. Thus, all PDF files in the current directory will be deleted.
  2. Linux
    1. Press <ALT>+<Ctrl>+<F1> and login or enter your login name and password regulary but press <F1> instead of <Return>. Then you just go from here, as in Solaris (see above) under item I.2.

Make sure there are no files called core and that the directories calles .Trash are empty. These subdirectories are in:

  • *. / Mail / Trash
  • *. / .dt / Trash
  • *. / Nsmail / Trash

Please consider also the hidden files. On Windows you can make them being listet by choosing Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> see below

To display the files sizes choose View -> Details.

I forgot my Unix password

This is bad! The only way for you now is to visit the Linux support in the Neubau building, where the password can be reset. Always bring a photo ID.

I want to change my Unix password

You can change your user attributes in the Userportal.

What is my eMail address?

Your email address is:

  • <user>@informatik.uni-bonn.de

where <user> of course being replaced by your own username. After setting up the account the login name is listed on the bulletin board in the containerbuilding.

How can I access my eMails?

There are different ways to read your emails. It is recommended to use the program Mozilla Thunderbird, as it is known on both Windows as well as on UNIX operating systems. At https://mailbox.informatik.uni-bonn.de/ there is a detailed description. In addition, there is also described how to define e-mail filter and how you can forward your emails to other addresses. Another simple way - without comfort - go read the emails via the webbrowser based access.

I want to access my eMails from home

  • You can access your eMails from home, provided that you have access to the internet. Set up your eMail client program as you can read in the section above.
  • It is recommended to read your eMails via IMAP so that the eMails stay on the server. Thus you are able to access all messages from both your home as well as from the university.
  • Note the account provided by the HRZ is not the same as the account provided by the Institute for Computer Science.
