How to apply
The Master in Computer Science (Master Informatik) at Bonn University is a research-oriented degree requiring talent and ambition. It brings our students to the forefront of knowledge in one of the major fields of computer science. Our students are selected by a committee of four professors based on the evaluation of their academic record, recommendations and (possibly) an additional interview.
If you are interested in applying to the Master's Program in Computer Science (Master Informatik), we kindly ask you to register at our Online Application System and read the information on our application requirements carefully. It is absolutely necessary to send us all required documents via the Online Application System. If you anticipate any problem in this respect, please get in touch with us immediately. Please note: do not send us copies of your documents by email or hard copies by mail! We only accept applications sent to us via the Online Application System.
Application deadlines
- Summer Semester 2012: March 15, 2012 (EU-citizens), deadline for Non-EU-citizens has expired, applications are no longer accepted!
- Winter Semester 2012/13: May 1, 2012 (Non-EU-citizens); September 15, 2012 (EU-citizens)
Please note: All applications will be processed within six weeks after the deadline of the respective intake. We will reply to you by email. Please wait for this reply. Queries on the status of your application will not be answered!
Online application
For your application please use our Online Application System. We no longer accept applications sent to us by mail or email. Only applications submitted online will be visible for the selection committee. This also applies to documents that are handed in after the application has been submitted.
Documents to be submitted
In order to be considered for admission, applicants must submit the following documents via the Online Application System:
Mandatory documents (in English OR German):
- Bachelor certificate (current Bachelor students, please see comment below)
- Transcript of records
- Secondary school leaving certificate
- TOEFL or IELTS result (please see comment below)
- Statement of purpose
- Curriculum Vitae
- Name and address of two referees
Recommended documents:
- GRE Computer Science test result (highly recommended for applicants with university degrees from Non-EU/EFTA-states - please see comment below). We do not accept the GRE General Test!
ONLY COMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED! Applications missing one or more of the mandatory documents listed above, will be rejected right away!
Only applications/documents submitted via our Online Application System will be considered!
Admission requirements
- good to very good bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in computer science or related area
- good to very good TOEFL or IELTS result
- solid foundations in:
- mathematics for computer science
- theoretical computer science
- programming, software technology, information systems
- computer engineering and machine-oriented informatics
Bachelor certificate
Applicants not having finished their bachelor studies before the application deadline expires, are allowed to apply without final bachelor certificate. Please note that the final bachelor certificate needs to be handed in before the semester starts (for winter semester: September 30 / for summer semester: March 31).
TOEFL/IELTS
Handing in a TOEFL or IELTS result is mandatory for all applicants. Applications without either test result will not be considered. Exempt from this rule are:
Deutsche Bewerber, die ein Mimimum an 8 Jahren Schulenglisch vorweisen können, müssen kein TOEFL/IELTS Zertifikat einreichen.
Nationals and/or first-degree-holders of the following countries (earned IN the respective countries) do not have to submit a TOEFL or IELTS result: Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, English-speaking Canada, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritius, Micronesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, St.Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
Minimum scores for TOEFL/IELTS (results below minimum score will not be accepted):
- TOEFL paper-based: 550 points
- TOEFL computer-based: 213 points
- TOEFL internet-based: 80 points
- IELTS: 6.0
Applicants taking the TOEFL test are asked to use the University's TOEFL Code Number: 4856.
GRE Computer Science Test
For all applicants with university degrees from Non-EU/EFTA-States, we highly recommend to take the GRE Computer Science Test before applying and submit the result to us along with the application. The same applies to applicants with a bachelor's degree in an area that is not strictly computer science-related (e.g. engineering degrees). Please note that GRE subject tests can only be taken in October, November and April. Do not forget to register early for the test. Information on test centers and dates are published on this site.
Please note: The GRE General Test does NOT replace the GRE Computer Science Test. We only accept GRE Computer Science test results!
Applicants taking the GRE Computer Science Test are asked to use the University's GRE Code Number: 7296.
Applicants from China and Vietnam
Applicants having completed their previous education in China or Vietnam must include a Certificate of Authenticity (Echtheitsbestätigung) of their documents issued by the Academic Acknowledgement Bureau in Beijing (Akademische Prüfstelle in Peking) or Hanoi (Akademische Prüfstelle, Deutsche Botschaft Hanoi).
