The research fields of the groups of Professor Dr. Armin B. Cremers lie in the areas of descriptive programming, object-oriented databases, geo information systems, internet information systems, foundations and applications of knowledge-based systems, computer supported cooperative work as well as artificial intelligence and autonomous mobile systems (robotics).

Dr. Joachim Buhmann Dr. Rainer Manthey and Dr. Stefan Wrobel are Associate Professors in this department.

The group of Prof. Dr. Joachim Buhmann carries out its research in the field of real time image processing and active computer vision. Further topics of interest lie in the area of pattern recognition and the theory of neural networks. It applies multidimensional scaling and data clustering methods to analyze high-dimensional data records as well as relational data from molecular biology and linguistics.

The research group of Prof. Dr. Rainer Manthey works in the fields of databases and descriptive programming languages. Work in databases focusses on extending relational and object-oriented data models with various rule concepts (active and deductive rules as well as integrity constraints). Another main aspect of database research is maintenance of temporal information. Logic programming and event-driven programming are in the center of interest in programming languages.

The group of Prof. Dr. Wrobel concentrates on research in data mining, knowledge discovery and machine learning, in particular approaches to discovery from data with complex structure (e.g. multirelational learning) and scalability (e.g. sampling and active learning). In close cooperation with Fraunhofer AiS the group pursues research in text mining, geographical discovery and multimedia mining.
